1860 -  The Società Anonima del nuova motore Barsante e Matteucci (Anonymous Society of the New Barsanti and Matteucci Engine) was formed in Florence, Italy, to manufacture internal combustion engines.  On 5 Jun 1853, Father Eugenio Barsante and engineer Felice Matteucci were the first to record having designed a three-stroke gas engine. They obtained British patents. The first engine in actual operation was installed in 1856 at the Maria Antonia Railway Station in Florence.


1973 -  A US Federal Judge  declared the ENIAC patent invalid and belatedly credited physicist John Atanasoff with developing the first electronic digital computer, the Atanasoff- Berry Computer or the ABC. It was built in 1937-42 at Iowa State University by Atanadoff and a graduate student, Clifford Berry.


2012 - An announcement was made that engineers at Air Fuel Synthesis (AFS), England has developed a way to create petrol from air and water. Initial plan is to make a plant that will make 1,200 litres a day.

In forming one of the earliest models of memory, Bartlett observed that in remembering stories or events there is a tendency for distortions to occur.

1868 - Thomas Edison executed his first patent, by signing and dating his application. It was received by the U.S. Patent Office with an application date of 28 Oct 1868, and it was issued as No. 90,646 on 1 Jun 1869. The invention was an “Electrographic Vote-Recorder,” which can be used by legislative bodies, such as the U.S. Congress. It would enable the ligislators to vote for or against an issue by turning a switch to the right or left.

Portland cement was patented by Joseph Aspdin, a stone mason in Yorkshire, England (UK patent No. 5022). He made it by burning finely pulverized lime and clay at high temperatures in kilns and grinding the mixture into a powder. This hydraulic cement would then harden with the addition of water.  He named his invention “Portland cement” as it resembled the high quality building  stone quarried on the Isle of Portland off the British coast.

1814  The first modern plastic surgery was performed at the Duke of York's Hospital, Chelsea, England. American automotive industrialist.  In 1912-18, Willys_overland's output ranked second only to Ford. He reorganized the faltering Overland Company in Indianapolis in 1907. He expanded the Willys-Overland plant into a larger factory in Toledo, Ohio. During WW I, Willys-Overland became a major producer of trucks, airplanes and airplane engines. In later days,  the Willys-Overland company pioneered the WW II Jeep, a rugged off-road vehicle. In 1970, the company was bought by American Motors Corporation.

French-American efficiency engineer who developed the Bedaux plan for measuring and compensating industrial labour.

Bedaux was born in Paris in 1886 and migrated to the U.S. early in the 20th century. He is one of the pioneering contributors to the field of scientific management. Bedaux introduced the concept of rating assessment in timing work (80/60). He supported Gilbreth's introduction of  rest allowance to allow recovery from fatigue.
