Two extreme leadership styles were proposed by Robert Greenleaf. The servant first, and leadership first are names given to the two styles. The leader with the servant first philosophy will think of serving the needs of his followers in the role of a leader. As leader he thinks his primary responsibility is to take care of needs of his followers. Leaderfirst style person has the opposite view. He and his mission are first.
The servant leader approach identified 10 characteristics or qualities of a servant leader: listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, commitment to the growth of people, and building community.
