Discoveries and Inventions

1904 - Patent for the first direct current, interpole, electric motor  in the U.S. was issued to Mathias Pfatischer of Phildadelphia, Pennsylvania under the title "Variable Speed Motor" (No.775,310).
The improvement claimed in the patent was to "effect commutation without sparking, with a variable load as well as at variable speed and which is capable of rotation in either direction." The new design added auxiliary-field pole-pieces which were small as compared to the main pole-pieces.

1932 - , the first U.S. patent for a pump with computing facility was issued to the inventors, Robert J. Jauch, Ivan R. Farnham and Ross H. Arnold for their "Liquid Dispensing Apparatus" (No. 1,888,533). The pump with the computing facility metered and displayed the exact gallons of gasoline or other liquid dispensed, and also accurately computed and showed the price in dollars and cents of the quantity delivered.

1941, in the Federal Register, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration specified the first minimum daily requirements for dietary supplements - for vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin D, thiamine, riboflavin, calcium, iron, iodine, and phosphorus.

The Wealth of Nations was published on 9 March 1776.

Alexander Hamilton was influenced in part by The Wealth of Nations to write his Report on Manufactures, in which he argued against many of Smith's policies. Interestingly, Hamilton based much of this report on the ideas of Jean-Baptiste Colbert, and it was, in part, Colbert's ideas that Smith responded to with The Wealth of Nations.

David Olson Ulrich - Management Professor - HR and OB

David Olson Ulrich (born 13 September 1953) is a university professor and management consultant. Ulrich is a professor of business at the Ross School of Business, University of Michigan.  He has written  books in the areas of  human resources and leadership. Ulrich is  a Fellow in the National Academy of Human Resources.

In 2012, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from HR Magazine in 2012 for being the "father of modern human resources."

Dave Ulrich has been ranked the #1 Management Educator & Guru by BusinessWeek and was named the most influential person in HR by HR Magazine for three years.

Ulrich was born in the town of Ely, Nevada, but grew up in Oregon. He attended high school in Kansas.

Ulrich completed his undergraduate degree in University Studies in five semesters and began graduate school in Organizational Behavior in Brigham Young University.  He completed his doctorate in business at UCLA.

Dave Ulrich’s  research  has addressed questions on how organizations add value to customers and investors through both leadership and strategic human resource practices. In collaboration with Wayne Brockbank and Jon Younger, Ulrich has articulated how the modern HR organization can be organized into shared services, centers of expertise, and business partners. He was also involved in  research  about the competencies required for successful HR professionals. He also made efforts to shape thinking on how to transform HR practices so that they are aligned to customer needs.  In the leadership area, Norm Smallwood and Ulrich have worked to focus on the outcomes of effective leadership; how effective leadership will increase customer share by creating a leadership brand within the company. Their work also indicates that investing in leadership will increase shareholder value.

Society and Economy in Modern Britain 1700-1850

Richard Brown
Routledge, Nov 1, 2002 - 496 pages
For both contemporaries and later historians the Industrial Revolution is viewed as a turning point' in modern British history. There is no doubt that change occurred, but what was the nature of that change and how did affect rural and urban society? Beginning with an examination of the nature of history and Britain in 1700, this volume focuses on the economic and social aspects of the Industrial Revolution
